Being in the type of relationship I am in, and the dynamics within a poly relationship, you start to develop your own ideas about commitments. Especially how you view marriage. And the greatest part of not subscribing to one set religion is that you are not limited to one view on one of the most sacred and personal commitments.
Two marriage concepts I have found myself drawn to the most are the ideas of a Celestial Marriage and a Covenant Marriage.
The idea of a Covenant Marriage comes from the Christian Movement in the US, and it is actually a legal type of marriage in AZ, AR and LA. I love so many of the ideals associated with a Covenant Marriage. One of the things Master and I decided when we first got married was that divorce was not an option. Part of a Covenant Marriage is that there are only 3 instances when a divorce is granted, so it removes the concept of no-fault divorce. It also requires premarriage counseling (which the military did require), and prohibits pre-marriage cohabitation, which worked for us, since we did not technically live together until after we were married. It also prohibits children out of wedlock.
Then there is the Celestial Marriage. This concept comes from the LDS church, of all places. When a person is sealed to another in marriage, they are sealed for eternity. They will be married even in the afterlife. I love the concept and belief that Master and I will be joined even after this life is over. And this falls in line with what I believe, that through the lifetimes, through the centuries in this line, I have been Master's girl, and Master's slave.
The way my version of these concepts differs is that I believe they begin at the time of commitment. Whenever a commitment is made, a real, full commitment, no matter how it is expressed, as long as it is mutual and within the constraints of a relationship dynamic, the concept of Covenant and Celestial Bonds can begin. You do not need both for the level of commitment to be present. I view our marriage as a Covenant and Celestial Marriage, and treat it as such. I also believe that, with the right person, we could have a Covenant and Celestial Triad as well.
