That is exactly how I feel right now.
Everyone in our local area is harping on community and being there for each other and coming together across group lines. The last month in particular has really proven to me that it is all talk, all show. How do I know this?
One of the couples in my "home group," who is usually quite active, has basically vanished. I call the wife of the couple my big sister, so I have been in contact with them constantly. So, before writing this, I confirmed the information with her. But as of today, even though they have vanished from Fetlife and Facebook both, only one couple from our "home group" has even bothered to make sure they were ok. NO ONE ELSE has called or stopped by to make sure they were ok. The only way the others in the community know they are alive is because they happened to run into them at the store.
How the hell can you preach unity when NO ONE has even noticed that a major part of our group has vanished?
Another reason I say the whole unity movement is all for show? EVERYONE I speak to and meet personally knows I am from NYC, hell, they all have been told I am from Staten Island, they all know I still have family there, yet not a single person has even bothered to ask if my family is ok after Hurricane Sandy. They all know that Master's other girl is in Staten Island still. Not a single one has asked if she is ok. Hell, if you are on my friends list on Fetlife, you have all seen that I recently posted on her wall a message of comfort, it popped up in your news feed. And still, not a single person has bothered to ask if she is ok. NO ONE seems to care.
The high school kliq mentality of everyone in the local groups has NEVER been more evident. In a time when we should all be coming together to support a member of our own community, no one notices that she has vanished for 2 months. When a member's childhood home has been ravished and looks like a war zone, no one even bothers to check on her mental state.
CommUNITY? Yeah, right. The entire "Community" here is in a sorry state of affairs.
