Like everything else, it is all in the attitude. It is how it is presented and how it is accepted. One of the most common activities for a pet girl, puppy as she is or kitten as I am, is kennel time. As a reward, it can be presented as a time to reflect alone on pleasant things. It can be a time to cuddle with lovies or stuffies (small stuffed animals or pet girl toys), of time with a toy for self pleasure. For a pet girl, the confinement of the kennel can be a comfort, the boundaries a girl needs. Being given snacks of a drink from a pet bowl as a reward for good behavior or hard work. Even being restrained in the kennel for Master's visual or sexual pleasure can be seen as a reward.
On the flip side, being restrained in the kennel without lovies or stuffies, alone, can be a punishment. Being locked in the kennel with nothing to read, play with, or watch, alone with nothing but your own thoughts can be a punishment. Being bound for Master's amusement while He self pleasures is a punishment. The withholding of food or drink, or the offer of food or drink a girl does not enjoy, is also a punishment.
The kennel is a form of control. Master can control absolutely everything in the little universe of the kennel. And Master can protect His girl from everything and anything in that small universe, which, to the girl in pet space, is the entire universe.
